Former Ghanaian boxer, Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, has been freed after the Dansoman Circuit Court discontinued the case against him over an alleged death threat against National Sports Authority Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
Ayitey Powers appeared before the court on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, after being remanded for one week in connection with the case.
His arrest followed a call by the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) for his arrest and prosecution over the alleged comments.
Background
The case involving Ayitey Powers followed the circulation of a video on social media in which he was alleged to have made threatening remarks against National Sports Authority Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
The development drew attention within Ghana’s boxing fraternity, with the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee calling for Ayitey Powers to be arrested and prosecuted over the alleged comments.
The Accra Regional Police Command subsequently arrested him on August 24, 2026, and he was brought before the Dansoman Circuit Court.
Ayitey Powers was remanded for one week as investigations and legal proceedings continued. He returned to court on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, when the case was discontinued, bringing an end to the proceedings against him.
