African creatives are being given a new opportunity to better understand the business side of their careers with the launch of the Crux Global Academy, a free online educational platform designed to provide practical knowledge on music distribution, marketing and career development.
The initiative was launched by Crux Global at a press conference held at its offices at Adjiringano, Accra on Friday, August 28.
Speaking at the event, Chief Executive Officer of Crux Global Agency, Kofi Kyei, said the academy was created to address a gap in the creative industry where talented people often make important career decisions without sufficient knowledge of the business involved.
“Creativity alone is not enough to build a sustainable career. Creatives need to understand the business behind what they do, and that is what we are trying to provide through the Crux Global Academy,” he said.
According to him, many creatives release music, sign agreements or embark on projects without fully understanding the implications of the decisions they make.
“We want to make industry information accessible to creatives regardless of where they are, their level of experience or their financial circumstances. If you have access to the internet, you should be able to learn and make more informed decisions about your career,” he said.
The academy offers free online courses that creatives can take at their own pace, with lessons aimed at helping them understand the steps involved in releasing and marketing music and building sustainable careers.
The CEO said the initiative forms part of Crux Global’s broader commitment to developing the creative ecosystem beyond simply putting music on streaming platforms.
“Distribution is only one part of the journey. We want to help artists understand what happens before the release, what happens after the release and how they can use the information available to make better decisions,” he said.
Crux Global provides digital music distribution services, helping artists and labels release their music on major streaming platforms and reach audiences across the world.
Through the Academy, clients and other creatives can access practical courses covering areas of the music business, with the aim of helping them approach important career decisions with greater clarity and confidence?
“We believe that when creatives have the right information, they are in a much stronger position to negotiate, plan and build careers that they can sustain over the long term,” he added.
The launch also featured a panel discussion led by Crux Global Agency CEO, Kofi Kyei, and Chief Operating Officer, Ike Otoo Arhin, which focused on practical strategies for navigating and succeeding in the music industry.
The session provided an opportunity for emerging musicians to engage directly with industry professionals, gain insights into music strategy and career development, and build valuable media connections that could help increase their visibility and exposure.
Founded in 2019, Crux Global has expanded its operations beyond music distribution into artist and talent development, entertainment, sports, media, education and cultural strategy.
The company’s international connections include a relationship with Sony Music Group, supported by The Orchard’s distribution technology and global infrastructure, which Crux Global says helps connect African music with international platforms, audiences and opportunities.
According to the COO of Crux Global, the company’s African ownership gives it an understanding of the specific realities facing creatives on the continent.
“We are African-owned and globally connected. That gives us a unique position because we understand the markets and the challenges our artists face, while also having access to global infrastructure and opportunities.
“Our purpose is to create sustainable opportunities for African talent. We don't just want to help artists release music; we want to help them understand the industry, grow their audiences and build businesses around their creativity,” he noted.
