Ghana’s vibrant capital has officially cemented its status as a global entertainment powerhouse, ranking 18th on Time Out’s definitive list of the World’s Best Cities for Nightlife.
The extensive global survey, which gathered data from over 24,000 city-dwellers and industry experts, evaluated cities based on quality, affordability, social inclusion, and overall vibe.
Accra, alongside South Africa’s Johannesburg, which placed 7th, emerged as one of only two African cities to break into the prestigious top 20.
High Praise from Locals
Data from the index reveals that Accra’s nightlife is fuelled by a powerful sense of community and accessibility. According to the survey: 75% of locals stated it is easy to find genuine connection and community while out in the city.
65% of residents described the nightlife culture as exceptionally friendly and approachable.62% of respondents rated going out after dark as highly affordable.56% of survey participants gave top-tier ratings to the quality of the city's events and music.
A Dynamic Shift in the Nightlife Scene
While traditional hotspots like Osu continue to anchor the city with legendary staples—including Bloom Bar, The Republic Bar & Grill, and Purple Pub—the scene is rapidly expanding.
Upscale neighborhoods like East Legon and Cantonments are booming with premium venues such as MAD CLUB and Enzo Accra.
Time Out also praised Accra for its evolving musical landscape. While the city remains a global capital for Afrobeats, a rising wave of alternative electronic, alté, and 90s R&B subculture events has injected new energy into the midnight economy.
The Time Out Index survey is a massive annual global poll conducted by Time Out that asks city-dwellers worldwide about their local experiences, opinions, and quality of life.
Apart from the ranking compiled from responses from more than 24,000 locals, there were also assessments by Time Out’s city editors, culture experts and nightlife specialists.
Cities were assessed based on the quality and affordability of nightlife, clubbing and cocktail-bar scenes, community, safety, excitement, diversity and how welcoming each destination is.
With its unique blend of rich cultural heritage, affordable fun, and unmatched hospitality, Accra’s inclusion in the global top 20 confirms what locals and diaspora travelers have known for years: after the sun goes down, there are few places on earth quite like Accra.
