Sixty-eight people were rescued after two Granbird buses collided at Duapompo on the Kumasi-Accra Highway on Sunday night, leaving several passengers injured.
The accident occurred at about 10:31 p.m. when the two buses, each carrying 34 passengers, collided at Duapompo.
The VIP bus, owned by Chairman ION and driven by Mr Simon Azuma, was carrying 34 passengers, while the KN KIA bus, owned by KOD Transport and driven by Mr Francis Yeboah, also had 34 passengers on board.
In a statement issued on wednesday September 2, 2026, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said 67 passengers who sustained various injuries were rescued by members of the public before its personnel arrived at the scene.
The injured passengers were subsequently conveyed to the Konongo Government Hospital for medical attention.
Mr Azuma was trapped inside the VIP bus and had to be freed by firefighters from the GNFS.
The GNFS said its crew used a spreader in a dashboard roll operation to rescue the trapped driver.
Mr Azuma was later conveyed to the hospital in an ambulance with registration number GV 589-20.
The collision caused partial damage to the cowl of the VIP Granbird and the rear section of the KN KIA Granbird.
The accident occurred on August 30, 2026.
