Six people have been arrested following a violent mob attack at New Winneba in the Central Region, which left three people dead and about 15 others injured.
The suspects, Kweku Kakraba, 52; Arko Thomas, 19; Samuel Tulasi, 19; Samuel Gyasi, 22; Emmanuel Okyere, 22; and Seth Osei, 22, are in police custody assisting with investigations.
The incident occurred at about 10:40 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, when about 300 people from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze, wielding guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks, stormed the New Winneba township.
The mob attacked some natives and damaged stores, residences and other properties.
About 15 injured persons, including a police officer, were taken to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital at Winneba for treatment.
Three people were confirmed dead by the medical officer on duty.
During the rioting and attacks, the police retrieved one locally made single-barrel gun and an empty AAA cartridge from the crime scene.
Police personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters, Agona Swedru Division and Mankessim Division were deployed to the area to reinforce security.
The Inspector-General of Police's special team was also deployed as reinforcement, together with two armoured vehicles from the National Police Headquarters.
To prevent further attacks, the police have mounted six snap-check points in the area and intensified day and night patrols to prevent any further escalation.
Personnel from the Police Intelligence Department (PID) and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) have also been deployed to monitor the situation.
The police said the area remained calm and that the situation was under control.
