Can Afful retain the SWAG title?

Defending champion of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana’s (SWAG) Footballer of the Year, Harrison Afful, would wish to guard his title  for the second time when SWAG converge for its flagship awards in May.

Afful who plies his trade with MLS side Columbus Crew SC, would battle against his international teammates, Andre Ayew of Swansea and Shanghai SIPG’s Asamoah Gyan, ancidentally, the same duo he beat to pick the previous award.

The trio have been outstanding for both club and country, particularly the Swansea midfielder who has been inspiring and scoring three goals to help the Black Stars qualify for the grand finale of the 2015 AFCON.

Gyan’s was equally phenomenal during the year under review having captained the national team to the AFCON final as well as his fine form for the Chinese club last season.

 

Gyan and Andre would again battle with two accomplished coaches, Yussif Basigi and Bashir Hayford for the Sports Personality of the Year Award. 

Coach Hayford guided Ashgold to win the Premier league trophy for the first time in 19 years, while Basigi led the Black Queens to win gold in All Africa Games.

Other nominees include Footballer of the year (Female) Portia Boakye,  Samira Suleman and Janet Egyiri, while Eric Opoku, Kennedy Ashia and Richard Ofori slug it out for the Premier League Star award.

Bashir Hayford, Yussif Basigi and Henry Quansah will battle for Coach of the Year award.

Pro Boxer of the Year, Richard Commey, Amateur Boxer of the year, David Bawa, Athlete of the Year(Male), John Ampomah, Athlete of the year (Female) Nadia Eke, Para Athlete of the year,

Patrick Yaw Obeng, Hockey player of the year (Male), Johnny Botsio and Hockey player of the year (Female), Nafisatu Umaru.
