Coach Akonnor delighted after guiding Gor Mahia to win league title
Coach of Kenyan Premier League side Gor Mahia, Charles Kwablan Akonnor, has expressed excitement after guiding the club to this season’s league title.
Gor Mahia secured the championship with a game to spare after rivals AFC Leopards lost their final match, ending any hopes of taking the title race to the last day of the season.
“It’s always a great feelings irrespective of the club, to win title however is challenging. It was challenging due to the demands of the fans But a very joyful moment for ourfans and myself and the technical team”
Speaking to Graphic Sports in an interview yesterday, the former Black Stars coach said he was delighted to help the club win its first league title in two years and was hopeful of achieving more success in the coming seasons.
“I’m very excited to have guided the team to win the league this season, and I hope to continue like this next season,” Akonnor stated.
AFC Leopards had reportedly taken the Kenyan Football Federation to court in an attempt to have Gor Mahia’s final league game postponed to Tuesday or Wednesday. However, their defeat in the final fixture handed the title directly to Akonnor’s side.
The triumph marks Gor Mahia’s 22nd league title, further strengthening their status as one of Kenya’s most successful football clubs.
By winning the league, Gor Mahia have also secured qualification to next season’s CAF Champions League. Coach Akonnor said the club would intensify preparations ahead of the continental competition to ensure they make a meaningful impact.
According to him, the CAF Champions League provided players with a bigger platform to showcase their talent and gain international exposure.
“We are going to prepare very well because we do not want to go there as mere participants,” he added.
