Debibi stun Tamale City to complete historic promotion: Newcomers join Port City, AshantiGold ’04 in top flight

Debibi United stormed into the Ghana Premier League for the first time after a sensational second-half fightback condemned Tamale City to a crushing 3-1 defeat in last Wednesday’s Access Bank Division One League playoff final at the Accra Sports Stadium.

In a pivotal and tense playoff final, Tamale City looked firmly on course for an immediate return to elite football after dominating the opening exchanges and taking a deserved first-half lead.

But Debibi United responded with the composure and ruthlessness of a side determined to seize its moment.

Hat-trick hero

At the centre of the turnaround was striker Kwadwo Antwi, whose devastating second-half hat-trick flipped the contest on its head, dragging Debibi United from the brink of heartbreak to the doorstep of elite football.

At the final whistle, Debibi’s players and supporters erupted in celebration, fully aware they had just secured the biggest achievement in the club’s history.

The triumph crowns an outstanding campaign for the Zone One B champions, who have steadily climbed through the ranks and now stand on the brink of a new era as Premier League debutants.

Debibi United became the third club to secure promotion this season, joining Port City and FC AshantiGold ’04 as the newest entrants into the 2026/27 top-flight campaign.

Earlier last week, Port City underlined their dominance by officially clinching the Zone Three title with an entertaining 3-2 victory over WAFA SC in their Matchday 28 fixture.

Like Debibi United, Port City will also feature in the Ghana Premier League for the first time, completing an extraordinary rise for the ambitious club.

FC AshantiGold ’04 had already punched their ticket back to the top flight in an emphatic fashion last month after dismantling Skyy FC 4-1 at the Bekwai Gyamfi Park to seal the Zone Two title with three games remaining.

The former Premier League champions secured promotion in dominant style, signalling their readiness to re-establish themselves among Ghana football’s elite after a dominant campaign in the second-tier competition.
