Dreams keep lead after Mirren loss

Dreams FC remained top of the GN Bank Zone 3 standings despite suffering a 1-2 loss to Sporting Mirren last Wednesday in an ill-tempered clash at the Saint Thomas Aquinas Park in Accra.

Cudjoe Mensah of Dreams FC opened the scoring from a rebound after Mirren goalie, Augustus Nyarko, had saved twice from Khalid Abdul Basit but Joseph Nii Boateng made it 1-1 for Mirren in the 34th minute when his tap-in flew past Ishawu Yahaya.

Tempers boiled over on the sidelines in the second half after the scorer of Dreams'  first goal was sent off for a late tackle.

The hosts capitalised on their numerical advantage to get the winner from the penalty spot through Timothy Dabah.

Dreams drew on the  experience of striker Eric Gawu in search of the equaliser but he missed a late chance to draw the teams level.

"We lost but thankfully we still lead our zone," Dreams FC coach, Charles Kwablan Akonnor, told the Daily Graphic in a post-match interview.

"Before the game, I urged my players to control their own destiny so I won't blame anyone for this loss. I feel we faded a bit in the second half," he explained.

Coach Akonnor added that his main target for the season was not qualification but to remain in the Division, given the number of experienced teams in Zone 3.
