Former GFA Chairman, Ben Koufie dies at the age 84

Forrmer Chairman of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Ben Koufie, passed on yesterday at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital after battling illness.

Koufie, 84, played club football for Cornerstones and Ebusua Dwarfs. He also represented the national side, the Black Stars from 1957 to 1958. 

After retiring as a player, Koufie went on to coach the Black Stars and also managed Zimbabwe between 1988 to 1992. 

As a coach, his successes include winning the Africa Club Championship in 1971 with Ghanaian side, Kumasi Asante Kotoko in 1971, he also guided Accra Great Olympics to the semi-finals a year later.  

His expertise as a coach also took him to Cote d'Ivoire where he coached Africa Sports before returning to take charge of Ghanaian side, Akosombo Akotex. 

Koufie was later appointed the Technical Advisor to the Zimbabwe Football Association from 1981 to 1982, Technical Director of the Botswana Football Association from 1992 to 2001, and President of the Ghana Football Association from 2001 to 2003.
