General Salute rules at Accra Turf Club
General Salute recorded his second victory of the season as he secured a win in the Division 3B in the second day of the October Race Meetings at the Accra Turf Club at Borteiman last Saturday.
Owned by Godwin N.A Corquaye and ridden by Daniel Abekah, the seven-year-old horse beat competition from Sly Mongoose (Ebenezer Charwey) and Mr K (Joseph Lamptey), who came second and third respectively to finish within an average time of 1:40 seconds over a distance of 1,200 meters.
General Salute’s win and favourite Mr K’s defeat sparked arguments among some of the spectators who believed there was a conspiracy to deny Mr K victory on the day as they claimed Mr K was intentionally blocked by the winners.
The keenly contested race saw the three horses take the lead when the white flag went up, leaving the other four competitiors to trail behind.
The challenge for the top spot continued until about 300 metres to finish when Daniel Abekah (General Salute) increased his speed to clinch the first position.
The maidens’ division also saw less-fancied Benjamin Kotey, who rode Ikaida, finish first ahead of Simply Great (Romeo Nartey) and Larro (Davis Ahenakwah) respectively.
The Division 4A event, also saw Sea Never Dry (S.T. Madu) trot from behind to win the ultimate against Bonanza (Joseph Lamptey) and Who Is Free (Charles Ampah) to get away with the bragging right.
The competition continues next Saturday at the same venue with the Vanguard Assurance Challenge Cup at 1:30 pm to mark the 42nd anniversary of the insurance company.
