Ghana clinch nine medals at AYC in Gaborone
Ghana’s young athletes participating in the Africa Youth Championship(AYC) in Gaborone, Botswana, at the weekend won their ninth medal after Precious Attipoe won a silver medal in the boy's triple jump with a leap of 15.43m.
Precious, a Form One student of T. I. Amadiya Secondary School, jumped to his new personal best on his third attempt.
But he pulled a hamstring later which robbed him the chance to continue with his heroics and snatch the gold medal from Nigeria’s Fabian Adoki who won the event with a jump of 15.93m.

Despite nursing a mild hamstring strain, sprinter, Janet Mensah, last Friday qualified for the final of the girl’s 200m after placing second in the semi- finals with a time of 24.68.
After running an impressive 24.78 in the first round, Janet had to receive medical treatment after a sudden sharp pains in her legs, leading to doubts about her ability to play any further part in the event.
But she returned to the tracks to advance to the final, slowing down considerably in the last 50m. Maureen Nyatichi Thomas of Kenya won the race with 23.98 with Lydia Sahraoui of Algeria taking the third place with 25.15 Meanwhile, Ghana’s Godfred Kofitsey also secured qualification to the boy’s 200m final after emerging third in the last heats, while Abigail Kwarteng came seventh in the Girl’s High Jump event finishing with 1.50m as Anastasia Mensah exited the girl’s Javelin throw in the first round.
