GOC marks Olympic Day in Accra

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) led by its President, Richard Akpokavie, marked International Olympic Day with a lively community walk through the heart of Accra last Saturday morning.

Commemorated annually on June 23 by nations across the globe to celebrate the birth of the modern Olympic movement, Ghana’s event kicked off at the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum in Accra, where athletes, coaches, students, GOC officials and sports enthusiasts from all walks of life, sporting T-shirts with the Olympic rings emblazoned on the front, gathered beneath the iconic statue of Ghana’s first president before embarking on a symbolic procession through Christiansburg Castle (Osu) to the Accra Sports Stadium.

Selected schoolchildren performed aerobics routines, while Mr Akpokavie and officials of the National Sports Authority (NSA), led by its Director-General, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, joined in spirited fitness demonstrations.

In a bold move to expand the reach of Olympic Day, the GOC President announced plans to take the celebration beyond the nation’s capital, Accra.

“We want it to be very big and possibly go to other regions, so it’s not only based in Accra,” he declared.

The NSA boss praised the event’s unifying spirit, stating, “The Olympic Day is more than a celebration; it’s a call to action. We want every Ghanaian to discover the joy of movement and believe that they, too, can be champions in life.”
