Barcelona star, Lamine Yamal, has expressed doubts about his chances of winning this year’s Ballon d’Or award.
Yamal played a key role in Barcelona’s successful 2024/25 season, helping the club win a domestic treble—La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Supercopa de España.
In an interview with El Partidazo de COPE, the Spanish international admitted that winning the Ballon d’Or remains a distant dream unless he also secures both the UEFA Champions League and the FIFA World Cup.
“I don’t think about it. You get into trouble when you start thinking about winning the Ballon d’Or,” Yamal said.
“The focus should be on playing well and winning. If I win the Champions League and the World Cup next year, maybe then it will come. It’s all about enjoying the journey and letting things happen naturally.”
Yamal was also asked if the Spain versus France match, where he will face off against Ousmane Dembele, could affect Ballon d’Or votes.
He replied, “People talk too much about one match. For me, the Ballon d’Or should go to the best player of the year, not the one who wins a single game. If it were up to me, I’d vote for a Barça player, always.”
Lamine Yamal of Barcelona crowned the best young player in the game last season. Spain completed a treble of the top prizes, as Rodri took home the Ballon d'Or itself, while Aitana Bonmati retained the Ballon d'Or Feminin.
