Lamptey’s World Cup dream in jeopardy?

Tariq Lamptey’s hopes of forcing his way into Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have suffered a crushing blow after Fiorentina terminated the defender’s contract following a disastrous, injury-ravaged season in Italy that yielded just 25 minutes of football.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion defender is now a free agent at 25, facing an uncertain future after an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury and another prolonged spell on the sidelines effectively derailed what was supposed to be a career-reviving move to the Italian Serie A.

More significantly for Ghana, Lamptey’s lengthy absence from competitive football leaves him highly unlikely to feature in Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz’s plans for the Black Stars’ World Cup campaign, with the national team coach expected to submit his provisional squad to FIFA this week.

Fading dream

The persistent fitness struggles have left one of Ghana’s most naturally gifted defenders facing an uncomfortable reality of possibly missing football’s biggest stage at the peak years of his career.

It is a brutal collapse for the 25-year-old who arrived in Florence last summer believing he had found the perfect platform to revive a career repeatedly disrupted by injuries.

Instead, the move unravelled almost immediately. Lamptey joined Fiorentina in a £5 million transfer from Brighton & Hove Albion after making 122 appearances for the Premier League side, where flashes of explosive brilliance often battled against recurring physical setbacks.

The Italian Serie A club gambled on his pace, attacking instincts and versatility down the right flank. What followed, however, was a medical nightmare.

Lamptey made his Fiorentina debut against Napoli but lasted only four minutes before another setback interrupted his momentum. His only start came against Como last September, yet even that appearance ended disastrously when he suffered a serious ACL injury after just 21 minutes, effectively ending his season.

The Ghana international went on to miss 45 matches as Fiorentina eventually decided to cut their losses despite Lamptey having signed a three-year contract only months earlier. Both player and club have now agreed to a mutual termination of the deal in what amounts to an expensive and deeply frustrating miscalculation for all parties.

Lamptey now faces the difficult task of convincing potential suitors that his body can still withstand the demands of elite football.

Ghana career

Lamptey’s ability to drive past defenders, stretch teams vertically, and inject speed into transitions made him one of Brighton’s most dangerous attacking outlets.

His performances also earned recognition at the England Under-18 and Under-21 levels before Ghana successfully convinced him to switch international allegiance.

The Black Stars viewed him as a transformational modern full-back capable of adding pace and tactical dynamism to the national team setup.

The Ghanaian authorities moved decisively to secure his international future ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with Lamptey making his debut in a high-profile friendly against Brazil in Le Havre, France, in September 2022, and later featured at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Since then, he has made 11 appearances for Ghana across all competitions and was part of the Black Stars squad at the World Cup in Qatar.

His last involvement with Ghana came on September 8, 2025, when he was named as an unused substitute in the Black Stars’ World Cup qualifier against Mali in Accra.

Since then, injuries and inactivity have steadily pushed him further from the centre of Ghana’s plans.

With Queiroz preparing for a World Cup campaign that will demand intensity, tactical discipline and physical reliability, Lamptey’s prolonged absence from elite competition leaves him facing enormous odds to force his way back into contention.
