'Let’s work together to improve our infrastructure' — Sports Minister urges CAA Council

Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, has called on members of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) to collaborate in improving sports infrastructure across the continent to position Africa to host future global athletics events.

Speaking at a council meeting ahead of the 24th African Athletics Championships in Accra, the Minister said Africa has the potential to successfully host the World Athletics Championships if countries work collectively to upgrade their sporting facilities.

“Let us work together individually and collectively to improve infrastructure in the various countries,” he stated.

The Member of Parliament for Buem noted that the goal was achievable, particularly as countries such as Kenya, Uganda, and Botswana have already hosted major international athletics events with limited external support.

Mr Adams further stressed that Africa is ready to unite and deliver a successful global athletics championship when given the opportunity by World Athletics.

He also commended the World Athletics delegation for helping make the sport more attractive and globally competitive, while highlighting Ghana’s commitment to grassroots sports development through increased investment and the introduction of a sports fund to improve athlete welfare.

The Sports Minister expressed confidence in the Local Organising Committee’s ability to stage a successful championship.

President of World Athletics, Sebastian Coe, praised the level of preparations made toward hosting the championship, describing the CAA’s contributions to athletics development over the past 50 years as significant.

Tuwei Jackson also commended the Ministry for Sports and Recreation for the hospitality and support extended to participating athletes.

“We deeply appreciate this invaluable support from Ghana through the Ministry for its material, financial and technical support,” he said.

He added that the Confederation of African Athletics remains committed to addressing challenges within the evolving sports ecosystem and expressed confidence that the championship would create memorable moments that would further promote athletics development across Africa.

The 24th African Athletics Championships is scheduled to take place in Accra from May 12 to May 17, 2026.
