The football gala held on November 16 featured eight teams, including University of Ghana Enterprises Ltd (UGEL), The Union Ghana, and various colleges such as Health Sciences, Basic & Applied Sciences, Humanities, alongside the Alumni Association, Central Administration, and the College of Education.
Dr. Austin Luguterah, Director of the University of Ghana Sports and Wellness Directorate, shared his optimism about the upcoming league during a media interaction.
"We are optimistic of an exciting and successful league next year judging from the success of the gala," Dr. Luguterah stated. He outlined plans to expand from the initial eight teams to sixteen, enhancing the diversity and inclusivity of the competition.
The league is not just about sports; it's a platform for community building. "This league is important as it brings together the community as well as groups and corporate institutions operating within the University community," Dr. Luguterah explained. He highlighted the potential for inter-college sportsmanship among lecturers, aiming to strengthen ties across different academic departments.
The University has partnered with RITE Sports Services for this venture. Yaw Sakyi Afari, the head of RITE, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, noting, "We find this league a great opportunity for businesses to connect with decision-makers in both academia and corporate Ghana and an avenue for participating institutions to increase networking opportunities." He also pointed out the strategic scheduling of the games on Friday evenings, offering a perfect end-of-week activity for participants and spectators alike.
Further details regarding the structure, teams, and schedule of the league will be announced in the coming weeks
