Kansas City forward Temwa Chawinga delivered another outstanding performance as Malawi continued their impressive TotalEnergies CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Morocco 2026 campaign with a 3-1 victory over Egypt in Saturday's Group C encounter.
Fresh from their stunning win over defending champions Nigeria, the Scorchers produced another composed display to claim a second consecutive victory and move to the brink of the quarter-finals.
Egypt created the first meaningful chance in the 16th minute when Christina Salama fired narrowly wide before Malawi responded through Faith Chinzimu, whose run behind the defence was halted by the advancing goalkeeper.
Chawinga soon began to influence proceedings, forcing a save with a powerful effort before playing a key role in the opening goal. In the 35th minute, she slipped a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Rose Kadzere, who calmly finished from close range to put Malawi ahead.
The Scorchers doubled their advantage just before halftime when Chinzimu reacted quickest to volley home after her initial header had been saved.
Egypt emerged with renewed urgency after the restart and were handed a lifeline when Rose Alufandika was sent off for bringing down Habiba Hafez as she raced through on goal.
Despite being reduced to 10 players, Malawi remained dangerous on the counterattack and extended their lead in the 68th minute. Kadzere turned provider with a clever pass that allowed Chawinga to loop a header over the advancing goalkeeper.
Egypt responded almost immediately through substitute Eman Kassem, whose well-taken header reduced the deficit moments after coming on.
The North Africans pushed for another goal in the closing stages but found it difficult to break down Malawi's disciplined defence, while the Scorchers continued to threaten on the break through the ever-dangerous Chawinga.
The victory lifts Malawi to six points from two matches, putting them in a commanding position ahead of their final Group C fixture against Zambia on Wednesday.
Egypt, meanwhile, face a must-win clash against defending champions Nigeria if they are to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.
