Hosts, Morocco and Algeria claimed the two spots from Group A as their group campaign at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) ended on Monday evening.
Wins in their two previous games helped Morocco finish on top of the group with seven points after being held to a goalless draw game by Senegal.
A 2-0 win against Kenya in the final group game ensured Algeria claimed the second place with six points from their one loss and two successive wins.
Senegal exit the competition despite recovering from their opening day loss and pulling a win and a draw against Kenya and Morocco respectively.
Kenya, ended up being the whipping girls of the group, exiting without scoring a goal, the worse record they have had in their WAFCON outings.
Rivalry
Morocco had hoped to finish the game with the maximum points from three wins, but the Senegalese also had their own plan to at least earn a point.
Right from the first whistle to kick off the game, the Atlas Lionesses pressed hard in a bid to get an early goal, but goalkeeper Adji Ndiaye, denied them of any such joy.
Many times she saved the situation for her side, including a penalty kick that was taken twice.
On the 64th minute, Uganda referee, Shamirah Nabadda awarded Morocco a penalty whistling for a foul from Mareme Babou in the box penalty area.
Yasmin Mrabet elected herself to take the penalty which was bravely saved by goalkeeper Ndiaye.
The referee called for a retake of that penalty, ruling that the goalkeeper moved before the kick was taken, but Ndiaye rose to the occasion again.
The Moroccans, though disappointed, did not give up and were relentless in their pursuit of a goal, but the disciplined defense and the braveness of Ndiaye denied them.
It was one of the best performances from Senegal at this tournament, but it was not enough to save their campaign, let down by the opening day 0-2 loss to Algeria.
