Researchers have introduced a groundbreaking smartphone charging technology capable of fully charging a device in under five minutes.

The 320-watt charging technology, named “320W SuperSonic Charge,” was developed by Chinese electronics company Realme, setting a new benchmark in fast charging.

This innovation surpasses previous records, including the 300-watt charger unveiled by Redmi, a subsidiary of Xiaomi, in February 2023. That charger could power a device in just under five minutes, a record that had remained unbeaten until now, according to Live Science.

Realme debuted the new charging system at the Realme 828 Fanfest event in Shenzhen, China, on August 14. The technology can charge a smartphone battery to 26 percent within a minute and reach 50 percent in under two minutes. As reported by GSMArena, a full charge takes only 4 minutes and 30 seconds.

Unlike conventional methods that charge battery cells sequentially, this fast-charging technology powers multiple cells simultaneously.

During the demonstration, Realme showcased a folded battery design with a 4,420 milliampere-hour capacity, which stacks four cells on top of each other. This design increases capacity by 10 percent compared to traditional models, the company stated.

Researchers have miniaturized the battery cells and layered them to concentrate more charging power in a smaller space. These cells are then folded together, akin to the arrangement of satellite panels, as shown in a video shared on the platform X.

In addition to the charging technology, Realme introduced a new power adapter called the “Pocket Cannon.” Despite its compact size, this adapter is highly powerful and can charge other devices, such as iPhones with a USB-C port, although they won’t benefit from the same ultra-fast charging speeds.

Last year, Realme released a 240-watt charger with an adapter boasting a power density of 2.34 watts per cubic centimeter, capable of fully charging the Realme GT Neo 5 in under 10 minutes.

The latest adapter is even more versatile, supporting various fast-charging standards including UFCS, PD, and SuperVOOC. It also features two USB-C ports, enabling the simultaneous charging of two devices. The adapter delivers up to 150 watts for Realme smartphones and up to 65 watts for compatible laptops.
