Dubai is an inspiration to Africa - Alan Kyerematen

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Alan Kyerematen has described Dubai as a source of inspiration to Africa with regards to its development over the years.

He said that Dubai’s massive investment in infrastructure was certainly one of the ways Ghana could re-boost its economy, especially after the havoc the outbreak of COVID-19 has caused.

Mr Kyerematen was welcoming potential investors attending the ongoing Expo 2020 in Dubai who participated in the Ghana National Day Business Forum organised here today. (March 8, 2021).

The forum had as theme, Ghana: Limitless opportunities. It focused on exposing business opportunities of five key sectors to the participants.

The sectors were tourism, investing in Ghana, Trade finance, energy, Industrial parks and free zones.

The heads of various institutions relating to these sectors took turns to introduce their various operations to the participants.

These included the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), The Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA), Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Ghana Gas and Ghana Exim Bank.

Mr Kyerematen said the forum was being held at a good time when Ghana very much needed to showcase its limitless opportunities in order to attract investors.

He said 50 years ago, what Dubai had become presently was a dream which was worked on to become the reality of development which had manifested.

In his presentation, The Chief Executive Officer of the GIPC, Mr Yofi Grant showed the participants a video which summarised opportunities available in that sector.

The video mentioned investment opportunities in the Automobile Industry, Planting for Food and Jobs, expansion of factories health care, creative arts and sports.

He said the direction of the Ghanaian economy was to add value to natural resources.

The CEO of the GFZB, Mr Michael Oquaye, explained the necessary requirement for setting up businesses in such enclaves in order to benefit from some tax exemptions.

He invited the participants to Ghana to set up such businesses which would require them to export some percentage to Africa and the world.

The CEO of Ghana Exim Bank, Mr Lawrence Agyinsam, spoke about financing for investments and called for investments in the health sector such as the National Cardiothoracic Centre in Ghana in order to make it a place of competitive advantage where people from all over the world would travel to for medical care just as others were travelling to Dubai for.

The CEO of the GTA, Mr Akwasi Agyeman mentioned opportunities such as investment in tourism facilities at tourist sites saying that even though the country was well endowed in natural tourist attractions, there was the need to add value in order to make the much needed impact in attracting tourists.

He gave examples of hospitality facilities such as hotels and invited partnerships for that sector.

The Expo 2020 in Dubai which started on October 1, last year will end on March 31, this year.

The Expo site span 4.38 square kilometres which is equivalent to 600 football pitches.

The Expo has been the world’s longest running event and has been alive with sights, sounds, rhythms and flavours from across the world.
