The family of the late highlife legend, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, has announced that his final funeral rites will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

The announcement followed weeks of consultations between the family, the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.

According to the family the decision to hold the funeral in Kumasi was to honour the musician’s deep connection to the Ashanti Region, where his musical journey began.

Daddy Lumba passed away on July 26, 2025, at the Bank Hospital in Accra after a short illness. His death shocked the nation, as little was known about his health challenges prior to his passing. He was 60.

Following his death, the government, in collaboration with the Creative Arts Agency, organised a candlelight vigil in his memory at Independence Square in Accra on August 2. A book of condolence was also opened at his East Legon residence for fans, friends, and colleagues to pay tribute to the celebrated icon.

A one-week observance held later in Accra brought together top musicians, government officials, and industry stakeholders, including Bessa Simons of MUSIGA, Mark Okraku-Mantey, and other notable figures in the entertainment industry. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was also reported to have donated GH₵100,000 to support the funeral arrangements, underscoring the national significance of Daddy Lumba’s contribution to Ghanaian music.

The funeral, according to sources close to the family, will be themed “A Celebration of a Legendary Life” and will include performances by leading Ghanaian musicians and tributes from political and entertainment personalities. Thousands of fans across the country are expected to throng the Baba Yara Stadium to bid farewell to the man whose songs have shaped Ghana’s musical heritage for more than three decades.

Born on September 29, 1964, in Nsuta in the Ashanti Region, Daddy Lumba began his music career as part of the Lumba Brothers alongside Nana Acheampong in Germany before launching a solo career that redefined modern Highlife. With timeless hits such as “Aben Wo Ha,” “Yentie Obiaa,” “Playboy,” “Theresa,” and “Sika Asem,” he became one of Ghana’s most influential and enduring musicians.
