One such outfit is called A2Z Firm Movement which is organising the Miss Buy Ghana pageant. The basic aim is to enhance the campaign for the production and patronage of local goods.

After auditioning sessions in Accra and Kumasi about five months ago, 10 ladies were chosen to  compete for the chance to champion the cause of locally-made products and services.

Some officials of the  A2Z Firm Movement have been on the road recently with the 10 ladies to solicit the interest of the public, especially young people, to develop the habit of supporting stuff made by our own selves.

The Miss Buy Ghana idea  began two  years  with a song called  Buy Made In Ghana Goods recorded by  the  A2Z Firm Movement’s CEO, Felix Agbeko. He is also a musician who goes by the showbiz name, Gbuule

“The  song got ample publicity  on radio and television and at some of my live shows.  Then  I felt there was the need to move things a step further  to create more public awareness about  patronage of locally-produced  goods,” Agbeko said.

The regional rounds for the 10 finalists in the Buy Ghana contest took them first to Kumasi. An exhibition of locally made goods dubbed ‘Buy to Support’ was held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology  where buyers received coupons for voting for their favourite contestants.

“We wanted to target the youth because they also have purchasing power and are influential in what adults close to them buy,” Agbeko said.

The ladies also visited places of interest in the Kumasi area such as Manhyia Palace as well as Lake Bosumtwi and Bonwire.

In Tamale, the exhibition of locally-made goods was held at the Tamale Sports Stadium where a ‘Kick to Promote’ football gala was also held for schools and religious bodies.

Another exhibition will be held at the Obra Spot in Accra from December 12 to December 15.  The final contest to select three persons to be the faces of buy made-in-Ghana is scheduled to come off at the  Banquet Hall of the State House on December 29.

The three eventual winners will win Ghc20,000; Ghc15,000 and Ghc10,000 respectively to start some businesses of their own. They will also host a television programme to hammer home the buy made-in –Ghana crusade.

“We are making reasonable headway and we trust more Ghanaians have become aware that we ensure our own survival when we make and buy our own goods,” Agbeko emphasised.
