EDITOR’S LENS: ‘Detty December’ is here

THE year is drawing to a close, and Ghana is once again poised for its most anticipated cultural extravaganza — December in GH.

The energy is unmistakable: hotels are filled, event crews are working tirelessly, and the country is bracing for a festive season that promises to be nothing short of spectacular. Big fun is brewing, and revellers are more than ready.

For years, Ghana’s December celebrations have been a cornerstone of West African culture, drawing visitors from across the world. The festivities have gained even greater international traction, thanks in part to the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), which continues to position Ghana as Africa’s premier festive destination.

This year’s unifying framework, the Black Star Experience, brings a more coordinated and strategically marketed approach. Its packed calendar features signature events across music, food, arts, theatre and fashion, catering to a wide range of audiences.

Yet December in GH is not only about concerts and parties. The season also serves as a significant platform for business activities, hosting conferences, investment forums, and summits that attract global participants. These events boost tourism, stimulate the economy, and generate meaningful revenue for the government.

December in GH has evolved into a cultural and economic engine — a tourism catalyst and a global reunion point for the African diaspora.

The official calendar, running from mid-November to early January, spans meetings and incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE), as well as community-focused and entertainment-driven activities. This diversity shows the vast economic potential of tourism, arts and culture. To fully harness it, we must broaden our horizon beyond entertainment and recognise the sector as a vital driver of growth.

This year, Ghana is not alone in the festive spotlight. Nigeria is also gearing up for its own “Detty December,” complete with concerts, beach festivals, art fairs and carnivals.

Rather than viewing this as competition, Graphic Showbiz believes it should be seen as an opportunity. A stronger Ghana–Nigeria festive circuit can elevate West Africa as a unified cultural destination, attracting even more visitors to the region.

Fears that Nigeria’s celebrations will overshadow Ghana’s are misplaced. The region is big enough for both nations to shine and to thrive together.

In the end, Ghana’s December is indeed detty, vibrant, and full of promise. Let’s look beyond the noise and focus on showcasing our cultural heritage, strengthening tourism, and unlocking economic gains. With GTA’s continued efforts and our collective support, this December in GH is set to be unforgettable.
