Filmmaker Norman Busigu launches diaspora-focused media platform "Postcards From The Diaspora"
British-Ugandan filmmaker and media broadcaster Norman Busigu, renowned for his critically acclaimed documentaries on Ghana and Nigeria, is set to disrupt the media landscape with his new youth-led platform, Postcards From The Diaspora (PFTD).
The initiative aims to modernize news distribution for African and Caribbean diaspora audiences while creating opportunities for emerging young talent in the creative industry.
Busigu, an award-winning filmmaker and Forbes BLK member, identified a void in current media offerings. "The idea was born out of what I identified to be a big gap in the media landscape—a youth-led platform that provides those in the diaspora with news updates from Africa and the Caribbean in a factual, punchy, and fun way," he explained.
PFTD will initially launch as a monthly newsletter featuring concise "postcards"—brief news blasts tailored for young audiences with shorter attention spans. The platform plans to expand into live broadcasts, events, and collaborations with African and Caribbean governments as it grows.
Busigu emphasized PFTD’s dual focus: connecting diaspora communities with their homelands and upholding artistic integrity. "I wanted to create a platform where purity of the output is a foundational pillar," he said. The platform will also serve as a springboard for young creatives, offering roles for writers, presenters, and designers.
Yasmin Minnis, a British-Jamaican journalist, joins as Senior Editor, reinforcing PFTD’s commitment to fresh talent. Busigu, who credits his own breakthroughs to industry mentors, aims to pay it forward: "I want to open doors for new talent and create a pipeline for their development."
PFTD’s social media channels and newsletter will go live soon. Aspiring contributors can contact Busigu via Instagram (@normanbusigu) or email (norman.busigu@outlook.com).
With his third docu-film, Jamaica: Africa’s Close Cousin?, underway and accolades from Yahoo! Finance and GQ South Africa, Busigu’s PFTD promises to reshape how the diaspora engages with news—and who gets to tell those stories.
