‘God bless you’ not compensation for labour - Obaapa Christy
Seasoned gospel musician Obaapa Christy has said that charging fees to play at events is acceptable given that artistic excellence and top-notch stagecraft come at a cost.
In a recent interview on UTV’s United Showbiz, the W'asue Me hitmaker argued that it was inappropriate for naysayers to believe that gospel performers shouldn't charge for performances, pointing out that there were many expenses, including costume, makeup, and other incidentals, that go into the fees she proposes for booking her to perform.

The seasoned musician posited that she will not accept a "thank you or God bless you" gesture as compensation for her labour since she is a firm believer that all work should be compensated, even hers.

“When I began my singing career and started granting interviews, I was questioned about whether or not I charged for gigs, I always said yes. They inquire as to why I charge, and I respond that I need to eat, and wearing a nice outfit and applying makeup both cost money. Even in the Bible it is written that "he who works for the lord eats from their gains," and I charge to pay for all of these expenses.
She continued; “while we labour so that God will be glorified, God also commands us to take pleasure in our toil. Every employee should benefit from their sweat. So, if a pastor asks me to perform at a programme, should I not charge anything and just accept God's blessing in lieu of payment because I am a Christian? I don't agree with that.”
She urged her counterparts in the sector to stay on the right path and ignore what others have to say about how they conduct themselves.
“Let's be sincere and do what will suit us, but keep in mind that sin is only committed if our actions in any way provoke God,” she said.
