My mom’s death made me abandon science for fashion - Beryl Abou Chedid

“I loved my mother very much. She was my friend and we did everything together, she was always there for me and made sure I always had a smile on my face so it was a very challenging time for me when I lost her.

“My life came crushing and I was lost. For most of the times I found myself playing with my fingers or anything I could lay my hands on. I could just take a fabric and start stitching just to get my mind off the fact that I had lost my best friend,” the Ghanian-Lebanesse- Italian descent said.

“I lost interest in school and fashion became my new friend which was something I used to console myself,” she added.

According to the past student of the Joyce Ababio School, before she lost her mother she was a science student at the Radford University about four years ago but has no regret of choosing fashion over science.

“I do not regret dropping out of school and dropping my science course for fashion, I will say, this is the best decision I have ever taken in my life and I am proud of myself and I know my mom will be proud of me. I know I am on the right track,” she said.

Batash Clothing and Accessories is an establishment owned by 23 years old Beryl Abou Chedid, it has been in existence for about four years.

In an answer to how she will break into the already choked fashion industry, she said; “I know it will not be easy but if I have been able to stay through for four years and I am still in it then there is hope, I believe it is just a matter of time. And my current project with TV3 Ghana’s Most Beautiful 2015, to design the presenter’s outfit will help me promote my designs. ”

Throwing light on the just ended African Vogue Bazaar she organised , she said; “ I was happy at the turn out and it means that it’s a step in the right direction and there is more to come. Even though this is not the first time, the consistency in the attendance is overwhelming.”

As for challenges, she mentioned, finance and dealing with the right people and people’s acceptance to new trends but she is optimistic that it shall all pass.
