Photography is no easy job

Acclaimed Ghanaian photographer, Nii Obodai, has said that photography is not just about grabbing a camera and clicking at  anything in view.

Speaking recently at the opening of a photo exhibition at the Nubuke Foundation in Accra called ‘Compositions’ which he curated, Nii Obodai said  photography  was a highly demanding occupation where practitioners must strike at their integrity and constantly challenge themselves to produce outstanding work.

The exhibition was the outcome of a six-month workshop facilitated for five photographers, some of them first-timers,  by  Nii Obodai, under the Nuku Studio Workshops project.

“Along the way I tried to encourage them to use photography  as a tool for self-discovery, to explore the environment,  themselves, their loves and hates and also to use it to challenge their families  and society,” Nii Obodai said.

Nii Obodai has lived in England, Nigeria and Ghana. His photographs have been exhibited in Ghana, Britain, France, Holland and Mali.

He pointed out  at the exhibition that  the pictures on display formed just a fraction of the joy and pain the photographers went through  to get stuff ready for the show which ends on February 28.

“I think they have done some really great work and we must celebrate them by supporting and  encouraging them to do even better,” Nii Obodai stated.

Photographers with works in the exhibition are  Caleb Hampton, Seton Nicholas, Adoma Afful-Kwaww, Abdul Karim Abu and Peach.

In another development, Nii Obodai has been appointed head of a six-member jury to vet all photographs to be submitted for a contest being organised by the Goethe-Institut in Ghana and the United Nations (UN) office in Accra to mark this year’s International Women’s Day.
