If you missed the phenomenon that is Spinners, now is the chance to catch up before Season 2 arrives later this year.
The award-winning drama will air on Sunday 30 at 10 pm on Akwaaba Magic (DStv channel 150 and GOtv channel 102), giving even more Africans the opportunity to experience one of South Africa’s most celebrated series.
Directed by Jaco Bouwer and created by Benjamin Hoffman, Spinners follows Ethan (Cantona James), a 17-year-old from the Cape Flats in the Western Cape of South Africa, who is drawn into gang life while trying to support his younger brother. When he discovers the adrenaline-fuelled world of spinning, South Africa's unique motorsport culture, he sees a possible way out and a chance at a different future.
Produced by Federation MEAC and Native At Large, the MultiChoice, a CANAL+ company, and CANAL+ coproduction Spinners won audiences over with its gripping storytelling, authentic characters and fresh take on life in the Cape Flats. More than just a crime drama, the series explores family, survival, ambition and the choices that shape our lives.
Distributed internationally by STUDIOCANAL, the series has earned acclaim both locally and abroad. It became the first African series selected to compete at the 2023 Canneseries festival, won three awards at Dakar Series including Best TV Series, and triumphed over Emmy-winning HBO drama Succession at the Shanghai TV Festival. Closer to home in South Africa, it received a standing ovation at its sold-out Silwerskerm premiere and collected multiple SAFTA Awards.
Bringing Spinners to both DStv and GOtv reflects a shared commitment to ensuring great South African stories reach as many viewers as possible.
"Spinners struck a chord with audiences from the moment it launched. Bringing Season 1 to even more screens gives more Africans the chance to discover this incredible story and connect with its unforgettable characters. As we gear up for Season 2, we want the whole continent to be part of the journey," says Nomsa Philiso, Executive Vice President: Content, CANAL+ Africa.
