She said although it was presumed that science was difficult, it was necessary for female students to take up the challenge.

Dr Aboah threw the challenge when she inaugurated a renovated physics laboratory and a mechanised borehole for the students of Aburi Girls Secondary School in Aburi.

The two projects were executed by the 1990 and 1965 year groups respectively as part of their anniversary celebration.

Dr Aboah, who is an old girl of the school, cautioned the students to take good care of the laboratory and to take their academic work seriously.

“Government cannot be depended on to provide everything for the school, therefore, support from old girls is laudable,” she said.

STEM education vital

The President of the Aburi Old Girls Association 1990 (AOGA), Ms Akosua Oseiwa Opoku, said the renovated physics laboratory project was identified as a pressing need because it was slowing down teaching and learning of the subject in the school.

She said the year group decided to deal with one of the challenges the school faced as part of their 25th anniversary celebration.

As part of the celebration, she said the group would sponsor this year’s Speech and Prize-giving Day on June 27, 2015, on the theme: “Empowering the generation with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education.”

Commenting on the theme, Ms Opoku said it was important to empower the generation to develop an interest in STEM.

“Women have the future and Aburi girls are part of the future. Let’s empower girls to get to the top,” she added.

Water is life

The President of AOGA 1965, Ms Victoria Yaba Seidu, said access to potable water had been a major challenge of the school for a very long time.

She reiterated the adage, “Water is life,” adding that the group decided to  provide two mechanised boreholes estimated at GH¢30,000 for the school.

She advised the students to study hard since great opportunities awaited them. She also advised them to put their trust in God.

Headmistress

The Headmistress of the school, Ms Rosemond Bampo, expressed delight for the initiatives by the year groups and pledged that the facilities would be put to good use.
