ECG restores electric power to Kroboland after 3 weeks outage
After three weeks of no electric power supply, the Electricity Company of Ghana on Friday restored power to the Krobo area following an amicable resolution of an impasse.
The restoration of the power also followed repair works undertaken on destroyed overhead lines and transformers in the area.
The vandalised lines and transformers were detected during an infrastructure assessment of the facilities as part of the road map to restoring power.
After inspecting 81 facilities at 46 substations, the ECG officials detected that 35 substations had been tampered with.
28 have since been rectified and reinstated and that has allowed the restoration of power, seven substations which have been affected need further works, including the replacement of some equipment.
The substations
The substations inspected were at Nuasu, Kpowunor, Agbom, Abanse, Agormenya, Maadam all in the Lower Manya municipality, Slaughter House, Ogome, Somanya and Sawer in the Yilo Krobo municipality.
The Director of Communications at ECG, William Boateng confirmed to Graphic Online on Friday evening that officials of the company had worked around the clock to rectify the problems to enable it go by the roadmap agreed by a committee set up to resolve the impasse.
“Since last Thursday, our men have been on the ground for the repair works and final test of the network, after the inspection detected the damages on some of the facilities.
“The committee gave a road map and as part of that roadmap, power was to be restored by Friday August 19. Thankfully, the damages have been repaired so we are able to restore power to the Yilo Krobo and Lower Manya Krobo municipalities,” Mr Boateng said.
Since July 27, 2022, the entire Kroboland had been without power due to a misunderstanding over accumulated bills and the installation of prepaid meters.
There had been fierce resistance and alleged attacks on officials of the ECG as they went about their duties to install the prepaid meters.
The committee was thus set up to come up with a road map to not only resolve all the outstanding issues leading to power restoration but also ensure that the leaders of the area made all their people agree to the installation of the prepaid meters, as well as create a safe and secured environment for ECG staff to go about their work.
