Giving the advice, the Senior Nursing Officer at the Cervical Unit of the Volta Regional Hospital in Ho, Mrs Ruby Kwadzokpo, said the practice, which many females mistakenly perceived to enhance sexual vitality, was rather a major cause of infection.

She gave the advice during a health-screening exercise and seminar for the public at Community One, Tema, organised by the Women’s Fellowship of the Meridian Presbytery of the Evangelical Presbyterian (E.P) Church .

The event, which brought together more than 100 participants, including members of the fellowship within the presbytery, the clergy and other members of the public, was used to  launch the Women’s Day celebration.

Screening

A team of medical personnel from selected public and private health institutions screened the participants for various ailments and health disorders, including hypertension, diabetes and hearing impairment.

Mrs Kwadzokpo also warned women against any unhealthy sexual habits, particularly involving female children below 15 years, as they were most vulnerable to the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), the sexually transmitted infection that leads to cervical cancer.

She urged women with symptoms such as abnormal menstrual pains, syphilis and traces of genital wax after sex to seek early medical diagnosis and treatment.

Worthy mentors

Rev. Dr Bridgette Ben-Naimah of the Guidance and Counselling Department of the University of Ghana, and the Chaplain of EP Church, Legon branch, urged parents to serve as worthy mentors to their children in order to curb the high incidence of moral decay and child delinquency in the Ghanaian society.

She paid glowing tribute to Mrs Vida Dzobo and the late Mrs Vanlare for instituting the EP Church Women’s Fellowship and urged the current leadership of the fellowship to be committed to the promotion of unity in the Church.

The Vice Synod Moderator of the E.P Church Meridian Presbytery, Rev. Emma Sepah, who performed the launch of the Women’s Day celebration, urged women to not shun their parental responsibility of upholding virtues of dignity in their homes and in the society.

The President of the E.P Church, Meridian Presbytery, Mrs Gloria Kokloe, appealed to the various districts and congregational groups to mobilise the desired resources to support the spiritual and physical growth and development of the fellowship.
