Ghana must prioritise ethical considerations and data security as artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more integrated into the healthcare sector, Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, has said.

Speaking at an AI in Healthcare Seminar organised by the Health Communities of West Africa Association (HCOWA) on Saturday, February 22, 2025, he cautioned that while AI has the potential to improve medical decision-making, it should serve as a tool to assist healthcare professionals rather than replace them.

“AI must be harnessed responsibly to support doctors and nurses, not take over their roles. We must ensure that its use aligns with ethical standards and protects patient data,” Prof. Akoriyea said.

Dr. Marion Okoh-Owusu, Director of the Family Health Division, outlined AI’s potential in tackling major public health challenges, such as maternal mortality, child nutrition, and elderly care.

“AI-powered tools can help predict pregnancy complications, personalise nutrition plans, and detect age-related diseases early. These advancements can significantly improve health outcomes if we invest in training healthcare workers to use AI effectively,” she noted.

The seminar brought together stakeholders, policymakers, and international experts to discuss AI’s role in Ghana’s healthcare system.

Participants stressed the need for clear policies, ethical guidelines, and better digital infrastructure to ensure AI improves healthcare access and patient care without compromising data security or professional integrity.
