Free hernia operations end in Sunyani
The Brong Ahafo Regional Hospital, in collaboration with Operation Hernia (Holland), a team of Dutch surgeons and consultants, has organised a one-week free surgical operation for hernia patients in the region.

The exercise, dubbed “Operation Happy New Year 2016”, attracted both the insured and non- insured clients across the region. It was also used to train interested medical officers on how to carry out hernia operation.
Programme
According to the co-ordinator of the programme, who is also a lecturer at the University of Development Studies (UDS) in Tamale, Prof. Stephenn Tabiri, the exercise was part of the tradition of Fellows of the American College of Surgeons (of which the team belongs) to give back to the society.
Project
Prof.Tabiri also indicated that the people of the Upper West and East regions would also have their turns in April and December this year respectively.
The Medical Superintendent of the Brong Ahafo Regional Hospital, Dr Jacob Abebrese, commended the team of experts from Ghana and Holland for the initiative. He paid glowing tribute to Prof. Francis Abatanga, Dean of the School of Medicine,UDS,Tamale and Prof.Micheal Ohene Yeboah of the Ghana Hernia Society, as well as the six Dutch surgeons for supporting a worthy cause.
He gave an assurance that the Brong Ahafo Regional Hospital had the required standard facilities to undertake successful operations and, therefore urged the general public to avail themselves of efficient treatment.
Appreciation
About 70 patients, including children, benefited from the exercise. They expressed appreciation to their benefactors for their humanitarian gesture which, they said, had brought relief to them.
A 48- year old farmer, Kwabena Malma from Goaso – Kesse in the Asutifi North district in the region, who had lived with a hernia for the past seven years, expressed much joy after receiving treatment, describing it as “divine intervention.”
