12 Communities benefit from social amenities in Birim North

ZIJIN Akyem Development Foundation (ZADef), a subsidiary of Zijin Akyem Golden Ridge, a gold mining company in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region has started constructing various social amenities within its operational area.

The projects estimated to cost over GH¢4.18 million will cover 10 communities within the company's operational area and two others near the mining site.

The amenities are a football field, volleyball and netball courts, fencing of a school, water storage facility, residence for police, a 10-seater W/C water closet, urinal, a school buildings, durbar ground,

Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound and a storage room for palm oil processing among others.

The beneficiary communities include Abirem, Old Abirem, Adausena, Hweakwae, Amanfrom, Praso Kuma, Afosu, Akrofonsu.and Mamanso among others.

Communities request

At a ceremony to commence the projects at New Abirem last Thursday, where a walkway and land scaping for the police residence are to be constructed, the Chief Corporative Officer (COO), Yufeng Li said the construction of the amenities was in response to a request made to the foundation by the chiefs and people in the communities.

He said projects were designed to make a difference in the communities they served.

According to Mr Li, the initiative composed of three segments, education and youth development, sanitation facilities and water facilities.

Health & safety 

He explained that the projects when successfully completed would improve health, safety and the overall quality of life for the residents.

Mr Li said in addition, the projects could support cultural activities of the indigenes as well as enhance economic activities.

"We are helping to strengthen the local economy and preserve our rich cultural heritage.

"We at Zijin believe that true development is measured by the impact on people's lives," Mr Li stated.

Significant milestone

The Executive Secretary of the Zijin Akyem Development Foundation, Samuel Ofosu said the provision of such development drive marked a significant milestone to continue to improve more infrastructure development for the company's host communities.

He stated that the projects were carefully selected to respond to the priority and needs of the company's host communities that would enhance access to education, healthcare and other essential services while improving the livelihoods and promoting overall community well-being.

"This is not just about infrastructure, it is about people, it is also about creating opportunities, restoring dignity and making a meaningful impact in the lives of those we serve.

"ZADef remain firmly committed to supporting initiatives that drive inclusive sustainable and impactful infrastructure development," Mr Ofosu stated.

Mr Ofosu urged the contractors to speed up work in order to complete the projects on time since the scheduled period for the projects are one year or below.

The Chief of Ntronang, Osabarima Asiedu Akora II indicated that the projects would improve the socio-economic well-being of the people.
