Dumasua midwife wins Overall Outstanding GHS Award

A Principal Midwifery Officer at the Dumasua CHPS compound in the Sunyani West District of the Bono Region, Vivian Opoku Kyeremeh, has emerged the Overall Most Outstanding Staff of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) at the second edition of the GHS Excellence Awards.

The award celebrated her contributions to healthcare delivery and her transformative impact on communities across the country.

A citation presented in her honor highlighted her outstanding leadership and tireless dedication since 2014, particularly in underserved areas. “Through her initiatives in periodic sanitation, environmental beautification, and facility improvements, Ms Kyeremeh has enhanced healthcare accessibility and outcomes,” the citation read.

Achievements

Her achievements include introducing pregnancy schools, antiretroviral therapy (ART) services, cervical screenings and adolescent health programmes at Dumasua CHPS, resulting in a zero maternal mortality rate.

Additionally, her ability to mobilise resources and foster partnerships has strengthened the referral system and ensured quality care at the facility.

The awards ceremony, held yesterday in Accra, on the theme: “Sustaining Partnerships for Effective and Efficient Healthcare Delivery,” celebrated a total of 77 facilities and individuals for their exemplary contributions to healthcare in the country.

The event was graced by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Other dignitaries in attendance included the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, the Deputy Minister of Health, Adelaide Yaa Agyeiwaa Ntim and the Director-General of the GHS, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye.

Commendation

President Akufo-Addo in his remarks, commended healthcare professionals for their selflessness and resilience in delivering quality healthcare services, particularly during challenging times.

He praised the GHS for its transformative efforts, noting that its community health initiatives, strengthened primary healthcare networks and outreach to remote areas demonstrated the government’s commitment to ensuring equitable healthcare access for all.

“The Ghana Health Service stands as a symbol of resilience and progress, embodying the enduring spirit of our nation. It is inspiring to see how the tireless efforts of our health professionals have propelled healthcare delivery across Ghana, ensuring access to quality care even in the most challenging times,”

He said the  past few years had tested the resilience of the country’s healthcare system like never before.

However, through the dedication and selflessness of the healthcare workers, he said the country was able to overcome those challenges and emerged stronger.

He said  efforts in extending community health services, strengthening primary healthcare networks, and reaching remote areas demonstrated its commitment to leaving no one behind.

“As President, I am proud of the progress made under my administration to strengthen our healthcare system. Over the past eight years, we have recruited over 202,000 medical professionals, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and allied health workers. We have prioritised training and capacity-building to equip our workforce with the skills needed for modern healthcare delivery.

These advancements, coupled with expanded National Health Insurance coverage and the Agenda 111 infrastructure project, are transforming healthcare delivery across the country,” he said.

Commitment to excellence

The deputy health minister  also congratulated  to the awardees, describing their achievements as a testament to their dedication and resilience. 

“Your commitment to excellence serves as a powerful reminder of our shared vision to improve healthcare outcomes for every Ghanaian,” she said

The Ga Mantse also urged all traditional authorities to actively support healthcare delivery within their communities.

He indicated that such collective effort was essential to achieving universal health coverage, ensuring that no one was left behind.
