GWL to expand service in Upper West Region

The Chairman of the Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Eric J. Biliguo Adam, has assured residents of Wa and its surrounding communities of a major expansion in water supply and connectivity beginning in January 2026, following an assessment tour of facilities in the region.

He said it was unacceptable for communities to have water pipes running through their towns but not have access to potable water.

“It does not make economic sense for water to be flowing through these communities, yet they are struggling daily to access potable water.

“Each village should have at least three or four standpipes. We will task management to immediately address this,” he said.

Working visit

Mr Adam said this when he led the board of directors of the company to tour the Jambusi water treatment plant in Wa after their board meeting.

He said every year, the board rotates its meetings to the regions and uses the opportunity to interact with the regional staff.

“We came here for our board meeting and decided to meet with the management and workforce to listen to their problems and challenges,” he said.

Road network

Mr Adam expressed concern about the deplorable nature of the road from Wa to the Jambusi plant, describing it as a major hindrance to its operations.

“When we return, the board will engage the relevant agencies to improve the road network from Wa to this place.

It is very important for operations and safety,” he said.

The chairman said the Jambusi plant was currently operating at 40 per cent of its installed capacity because many homes and institutions in Wa were still not connected to the GWCL network.

“It does not make economic sense that people are digging boreholes while we have a treatment plant that can produce more quality water”, and therefore urged residents, institutions and businesses in Wa to connect to the GWCL network to enhance the plant’s utilisation and improve revenue generation.

“If you are not using our services, we cannot justify expansion. Connectivity is low and that must change for us to increase production,” he stressed.
