IGP deploys special team to Gbeniyiri following communal clashes
The Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has ordered the immediate deployment of a specialised intelligence-led team to the troubled town of Gbeniyiri, following a violent outbreak of reprisal attacks between members of the Brifo and Fulani communities.
In a statement issued from the Regional Police Headquarters in Damongo yesterday, the command confirmed that the joint team of intelligence officers and investigators had been dispatched to reinforce the existing regional command.
The move signals growing concern over the escalating cycle of violence in the remote Savannah community.
Intervention
According to a police communique signed by the Staff Officer for the Savannah Region, ASP Richard Osei Yaw, the rapid intervention was aimed at intensifying security and ensuring that perpetrators of the recent unrest were swiftly apprehended.
The Savannah Regional Command assured the public that the situation was firmly under control.
In a press release, the command emphasised that calm had been restored to the township, even as the newly arrived crack team searched the area for suspects.
"The team comprising intelligence officers and investigators is providing support to the regional command to intensify security and to bring perpetrators to justice," the statement said.
Residents in the volatile catchment area around Gbeniyiri had been urged to go about their lawful duties without fear, as police visibility was expected to increase significantly in the coming days.
The police have not yet confirmed whether any arrests have been made or if there were casualties in the clashes, stating only that efforts to apprehend those responsible for the attacks are "ongoing."
