Old student constructs sanitation facility for Ateiku basic school

An educationist, Isaac Kwadwo Okyere, has stressed the need for the affluent in society to contribute meaningfully towards the physical development of their alma mater that had brought them up to their current status in society.

A former Birim North District Director of Education, Mr Okyere, made the call when he handed over a three-unit urinal facility to the staff and students of the Ateiku District Assembly Model Basic School in the Wassa East District in the Western Region.

The GH¢10,000 facility was constructed by Mr Okyere in response to an appeal to him by the Headmistress of the school, Joyce Maneane, during a visit to the school. The headmistress requested three facilities, namely, a classroom block for the kindergarten, furniture and a urinal for the staff and students of the school.

Environmental pollution

Mr Okyere said considering the way the teachers and students urinated on the compound, he decided to provide a urinal facility for the school to prevent environmental pollution with its attendant outbreak of diseases.

The school with a total enrolment of 430, which also serves as a centre for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), is the first basic school to be established in the Ateiku Zone.

 The handover was witnessed by the Ateiku Circuit Supervisor of Schools, Patrick Appiah, the Parent-Teacher Association executives, teachers and other stakeholders of the school.

Ms Meneane, who was overwhelmed by the gesture of Mr Okyere and the timely provision of the facility, was full of praise for him. She appealed to other old students of the school, philanthropists and non-governmental organisations to emulate the example of Mr Okyere and assist in uplifting the image of the institution, to motivate the students to study hard and come out with flying colours in their external examinations.
