SU Ghana embarks on fundraising

Scripture Union (SU) Ghana has launched a GH¢15 million fundraising programme for the construction of part of a multipurpose hall for SU Ghana Campsite project.

The hall, which will have a 1,000-seater auditorium, office spaces, and cafeteria, among others, form part of a bigger SU Campsite project yet to be developed at Pepawani at Aburi in the Eastern Region.

The fundraising, which has since started, is expected to end in December, this year. Donations can be channeled through crowdfunding app, Chango.

The bigger SU Ghana campsite would host children, young people and families throughout the year uninterrupted when completed. It is expected, depending on cash flow, to be completed in five years.

Rationale

Giving reasons for the construction of the campsite at a media launch of the fundraising campaign in Accra, the SU General Director, Rev. Derek K. Koomson, explained that for over 70 years, the organisation had been having camp meetings in public schools.

He, however, said due to the change in the educational policy by the current government allowing students to go to school in tracks, the public school facilities were continually in use so they were unable to host vacation camps in those public schools.

Rev. Koomson said they had since secured land for the project, adding “we do evangelism, Bible exposition and preaching of the gospel.”

The Project Architect, Joseph Hayford, said the site for the camp had a lot of resources such as trees, shrubs and access routes which together, creates an environment of peace and spirituality.

He said they would utilise energy sufficient systems such as solar panels and rainwater storage system for the project.

Philanthropy

The Chairman of the National Finance and Fund Mobilisation Committee of SU Ghana, Rev. Dr Daniel Ogbarmey Tetteh, said they needed givers, not rich people to readily help them raise the GH¢15 million for the project.

“If someone decides to put down GH¢100 a day for this project from now to the end of the year (133 days), you will have GH¢15,300 for it. When you break the amount down, you realise it is doable,” he said.

The Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, Most Rev. Dr Paul Kwabena Boafo, who launched the campaign, said for 70 years, SU Ghana had been nurturing children and the youth in schools, impacting not only the society, but communities, churches, companies and the world at large.
