Manhyia Prisons Division cries for help

The Manhyia Division of the Ghana Prisons Service is reeling under intense financial pressure following the recent hike in water tariffs, for which reason it is considering switching to the use of a mechanised borehole.

The division needs at least GH¢8,500 to construct the facility to reduce its dependence on water supplied by the Ghana Water Company Limited.

Subsequently, the Women’s Ministry of the Church of Pentecost, Asuoyeboah Assembly, has made a preliminary pledge to help fulfil the ministry’s mandate as a Christian group “to care for the needy”.

The ministry made the pledge when, through its President, Millicent Pimpong, it presented assorted items valued at GH¢3,000 to the inmates of the Manhyia Prison.

The presentation, which coincided with the celebration of African Union (AU) Day, was also to complement government’s efforts at providing for the inmates.

Mrs Pimpong said the items, which included cooked food, bags of rice, cooking oil and some toiletries, were meant to give hope to the inmates that all was not lost and that they could “remould their lives again”.

An Assistant Chief Officer (ACO) of the Manhyia Prison, Elijah Amo-Mensah, said society needed to help in the reformation and rehabilitation of inmates of prisons, especially after they had served their terms.

He expressed regret that many families tended to shun and ignore their members who were ex-convicts, saying that tendency triggered the desire in the ex-convicts to commit more crime to be sent to prison again.
