The 2024 parliamentary candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the Bolgatanga Central Constituency Elvis Figo Awonekai, has been elected the party’s Upper East Regional Chairman after polling 177 votes in the regional elections held in Bolgatanga.
He defeated his closest contender, Dr Moses Kwabena Atinga, who obtained 123 votes. Filson Kweku Awankuah polled 18 votes, Patrick Ayaaba secured 13 votes, while Osman M. Konkonba obtained one vote.
In his victory speech, Mr Awonekai said the newly elected regional executives had little time to waste as the party prepared for the 2028 general election.
He said although the candidates went into the election seeking different positions, the outcome had given them a common responsibility to work together to reunite the party’s rank and file.
“Time is not on our side. We have an election to win in 2028,” Mr Awonekai said, adding that the new executives would, within the shortest possible time, complete the necessary meetings and begin work in accordance with the party’s constitution.
He said ending divisions within the party was a major campaign pledge and expressed confidence that the newly elected executives had the experience and capacity to reunite the party and prepare it for the 2028 elections.
Praises predecessor
Mr Awonekai also paid tribute to his predecessor, Anthony Namoo, for his eight years of service to the party in the region.
“For eight years, I have worked under him. For eight years, I have worked shoulder to shoulder with him. He has sacrificed himself for the region. He has laid the foundation,” he said.
He said he would build on that foundation together with the newly elected executives to strengthen the party’s structures, reclaim the Upper East Region and secure more parliamentary seats for the NPP in 2028.
No jubilation
Mr Awonekai urged supporters not to treat the victory as an occasion for prolonged celebration, saying the party had significant work ahead.
“My concluding remarks will be that there should not be jubilation. We have work to do. We have a party to run and from here, let us get back home and prepare,” he said.
He called on party members and supporters to unite and prepare for the next general election, saying the new regional leadership would soon engage the grassroots as part of efforts to reclaim the Upper East Region for the NPP.
