Mechanised water system inaugurated at Wantugu

The chiefs and people of Wantugu in the Tolon District of the Northern Region heaved a sigh of relief last Tuesday, following the inauguration of a GH¢362,500 solar-powered  mechanised water system to provide the community and its environs with safe and potable drinking water.

Wantugu, a farming community has had serious water problems for many years and rely on an old dam situated at the outskirts of the community as its source of drinking water.

The project, which has six mechanised water points and an irrigation facility to ensure dry season vegetable farming, was sponsored by the Christian Children’s Fund of Canada (CCFC) and implemented by Baptist Child Development Programme (BCDP), both child-centred non-governmental organisations.

Residents of the area could not hide their joy over the project as they danced to traditional music provided by a local cultural troupe.

The inaugural ceremony was also to commemorate World Water Day which is celebrated on March 22, every year. 

Speaking at the ceremony, the acting Country Director of CCFC, Mr William Anim-Dankwa, said the organisation found it so vital and an important part of its work to provide safe drinking water for deprived communities.

“As we commemorate World Water Day, CCFC is proud to be associated with the success that has been chalked in the Northern Region and Ghana as a whole.  For over 20 years, CCFC has provided 12 dugout dams, 167 Rain water harvesting tanks and 26 hand dug wells,” he stated.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Tolon, Alhaji Seidu Abukari, said the project would no doubt contribute to meeting the regional effort of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

He commended CCFC and its implementing partners for the project and urged the Community Water and Sanitation team to put in place mechanisms that would ensure the sustainability of the project.

For his part, the Programme Leader of BCDP, Dr Terry Ansah, thanked CCFC for providing the funding for the project and urged the people to take good care of the facility to extend its life span.

The chief of Wantugu, Naa Alidu Abdul-Rahman, expressed his gratitude for the provision of the water facility and said it would lessen the burden on women and children in the search for water for drinking and other household chores.
