The Ashanti Regional Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has organised this year's Youth Leaders' Empowerment Dialogue Session for student leaders from selected tertiary institutions in the region, equipping them with knowledge on the rule of law, whistleblower protections and ethical leadership.
Held on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at the Apostolic Church-Ghana at Ayeduase in Kumasi, the event brought together over 70 participants drawn from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development, Garden City University, and the Kumasi Technical University.
The participants included executives and members of Civic Education Clubs, Student Representative Councils, and other organised youth groups committed to promoting responsible leadership within their institutions.
The programme is being implemented under the Participation, Accountability and Integrity for a Resilient Democracy initiative, commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, co-financed by the European Union and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs, and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance.
Opening the dialogue, the NCCE via a presentation highlighted the important role youth leaders played in shaping attitudes and promoting responsible citizenship. They urged participants to use their influence to help shape their peers through integrity, accountability and democratic values.
The Regional Director of the NCCE, Akua Zakaria, spoke on the Rule of Law, stressing that respect for the Constitution and the laws of Ghana is fundamental to democratic governance. She encouraged participants to uphold justice, fairness and equality, while rejecting corruption and other practices that undermined national development.
The Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, DSP Godwin Ahianyo, took participants through the Whistleblower Act, 2006, and the Right to Information Act, 2019. He explained the protections available to whistleblowers, the procedures for accessing information from public institutions, and the importance of both laws in promoting transparency, accountability and citizen participation in governance.
In the final presentation, the Agona District Director of the NCCE, Evans Nunoo, spoke on Ethical Leadership and Conflict of Interest, urging participants to demonstrate honesty, accountability and selfless service in their leadership roles. He encouraged them to avoid conflicts of interest and always place the public good above personal gain.
