The new Manet Police Station and Batsona Divisional Police Headquarters

New police station inaugurated at Manet

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Mohammed Ahmed Alhassan, has inaugurated a $200,000 police station at Manet Junction, near the Spintex Road in Accra, to promote public safety.

The new police station, which would meet the increasing demand for police services in the area, would also serve as the Batsona Divisional Police and the Okpoi-Gonno District Police Headquarters.

Two companies, the Manet Group, a real estate company and Adas Synthetic Industry Limited, a synthetic leather manufacturing company, sponsored the construction of the one-storey building.

It also has separate cells for male and female and is equipped with sanitary facilities.

Police lack accommodation

Speaking at the inauguration Friday, Mr Alhassan said the Police Service faced the challenge of providing adequate office and residential accommodation for its personnel.

“That is why we welcome government’s public-private partnership initiative. I have to emphasise that with population increases and urbanisation, government initiative alone may not be sufficient to deal with the demand for the establishment of new police stations and posts,” he said.

He therefore appealed to the Ghana Real Estate Development Association (GREDA) and other benevolent individuals, corporate bodies and nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) to support the police.

The Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, said there was the need to provide a permanent structure for the police, following the numerous attacks and reports of robbery in the communities along the Spintex Road.

The new police station, he said, would help reduce the police response time to emergency situations, enhance public confidence, reduce crime and disorder and promote public safety.

The Managing Director of the Manet Group, Mr Martin Beeko, said the decision to build the police station was in line with the company’s corporate social responsibility and was taken upon the realisation that there was no police station in the area, which was a hindrance to the security of residents in the area.
