Radiographers strategise to improve performance

The Ghana Society of Radiographers (GSR) has organised its fourth biennial national scientific conference to strategise on how to advance medical imaging and radiotherapy practice in the country.

The radiology departments in hospitals usually perform different imaging modalities such as X-ray, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging and nuclear medicine.

On the theme, “Advancing in medical imaging and radiotherapy - impact on patient care”, the conference in Ho brought together about 100 radiographers across the country who deliberated on issues concerning the profession and shared their  expertise in the field.

Unnecessary death

The conference is expected to ensure the appropriate diagnosis of patients and prevent unnecessary deaths or complications.

Speaking at the conference, the Volta Regional Health Director, Dr Joseph Nuertey, indicated that radiographers played significant roles in the provision of quality health care but their services were not available in many parts of the country due to the limited number of the professionals in the country.

Few radiographers

Dr Nuertey said most of the X-ray units in the hospitals in the region were manned by a few radiology technicians and orderlies who worked at the X-ray units and had learnt the work on the job, which is not the best for the region.

Achieve MDGs

‘This country cannot achieve the health-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) if most of the quality highly trained health professionals continue to accept postings to only hospitals in the metropolitan areas, to the detriment of health facilities in municipal and district hospitals”, he said.

He appealed to the radiographers to accept postings to the region so that the people could benefit from their professional expertise.

In his welcome address, the National President of GSR, Dr Samuel Y. Opoku, observed that their field of operation was dynamic, so there was the need for members to upgrade themselves by learning the modern trends of their job to be able to offer best services to patients.
