The government has announced a three-day line-up of activities from Thursday, August 7 to Saturday, August 9, 2025, in honour of eight persons who died in a recent helicopter crash.

A statement from the Presidency Communications Directorate described the period as a time for national reflection and unity. It said the mourning would give Ghanaians the chance to honour the memory of those lost and express solidarity with the bereaved families.

The victims included:

  1. Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence
  2. Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Member of Parliament for Tamale Central
  3. Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
  4. Mr Samuel Sarpong, National Vice-Chairman of the National Democratic Congress
  5. Mr Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate in the 2024 elections
  6. Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, pilot
  7. Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, co-pilot
  8. Sergeant Ernest Addo-Mensah, crew member

The programme of events begins on Thursday, August 7, with a public laying of flowers and lighting of candles at the Ceremonial Garden in front of the Jubilee House at 1:00 p.m. Members of the public were invited to join the observance.

This remembrance will continue on Friday, August 8, to allow more people to pay their respects.

The activities will conclude on Saturday, August 9, with a national event dubbed “Evening of Reflections and Memorials”, to be held at the Forecourt of the State House from 5:00 p.m. The event will bring together families of the deceased, government officials, political figures, and members of the public.

“These three days offer our nation an opportunity to collectively mourn and reflect on the profound loss we have experienced. We urge all citizens to observe the period of national mourning with dignity and respect,” the statement said.

Signed by Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, the statement added that further details on the State Funeral and related arrangements would be announced in due course.

The crash, which claimed the lives of both civilian and military personnel, has drawn widespread reactions across the world.

The President has suspended all official engagements during the mourning period and has called on the public to join in prayer and solidarity.
