The body of the deceased woman has been deposited at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital morgue, while Mr Manso is receiving treatment at the same hospital.

Police confirm incident

The Commander of the Odorkor Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Mr Abdullai Mumuni, confirmed the accident to the Daily Graphic.

Explaining how it occurred, Mr Mumuni said the truck, with registration number GT 6671-S, was being driven from Mallam Junction to Oyibi.

He said the driver, identified as Joseph Boameh, in an attempt to avoid running into a vehicle in front of him at the Kwashieman traffic light, veered onto the pavement and run over the two pedestrians who were trying to cross the road.
He also said the police would investigate the reason for the driver’s action.

Eyewitnesses

Earlier, some eyewitnesses had blamed a policeman directing traffic at the interchange for being the cause of the accident.
According to them, the policeman tried to stop the driver of the truck, even though the light had turned green.

They said the driver of the truck who was speeding, was compelled to apply his brakes, which failed. The driver, they added, was forced to veer off the road to avoid running into the policeman and a vehicle ahead of him. That, they said, led to the driver hitting Elizabeth and Manso who were waiting to cross the road.

The accident resulted in an exchange of words between the policeman and the onlookers.

While the onlookers insisted that the policeman could have prevented the accident, the officer also said the driver could have saved the life of the victim if he had obeyed traffic regulations which required motorists to slow down at traffic intersections.
Later, a team of policemen from the Odorkor MTTD who arrived at the scene managed to calm tempers.
