Water flows at Adentan

Water has started flowing through taps at Adentan near Accra after a protracted water shortage in the municipality. That followed the inauguration of the expanded Kpong Water project by President John Dramani Mahama last week.

Some homes are, however, unable to access the water because their pipelines have become rusty and faulty following the long years of neglect.

A fact-finding committee, comprising officials of the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing and the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), visited the municipality yesterday, during which a number of residents told the committee they now had potable water, after years of drought.

Complaints

The tour followed complaints from some residents of the municipality that their taps were still dry, in spite of the completion of the project.

At the end of the day, however, it was found that many of the areas within the municipality visited were enjoying safe water, while a few others remained without water.

Evidence

A resident of the Adentan SSNIT Flats, Madam Juliana Addison, told journalists who were with the committee that water was now flowing regularly to the flats.

She opened the tap to prove it.

She said water started flowing to the flats on Christmas Day and since then there had not been any interruption.

According to her, the situation was a relief to her family.

Another resident, who gave her name as Laura Naaso, confirmed the flow of water and expressed the hope that it would not be a nine-day wonder.

Appeal to correct the faults

Meanwhile, those who were yet to receive water made an appeal to the authorities to fix the problem.

For about 15 years, residents of the Adentan municipality had lived without safe water.

When fully completed, the project, which currently pumps 20 million gallons of water a day, will pump 40 million gallons per day to the municipality and other parts of Accra and the Eastern Region.

Team leader

A Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Mr Jonny Osei Kofi, who led the fact-finding team, gave an assurance that technical officers from the GWCL would be sent to the area soon to correct the faults on the pipelines.

He, however, advised that large-scale leakage should be reported to the GWCL district offices for correction.

MCE

The Municipal Chief Executive for Adentan, Mr Benjamin Angenu, advised the people to pay their water bills to enable the GWCL to meet its operational cost.
