The one-day programme which brought together selected youth from some senior high schools and tertiary institutions in the Greater Accra Region, was put together by the Edusei Foundation, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), in collaboration with the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference (GCBC).

The youth were exposed to career choices and opportunities that existed in various fields, as well as entrepreneurship and business creation.

More than 500 participants in the workshop were updated on careers in law, medicine, nursing, theology, banking, education, media and Information and Communication  Technology (ICT) by resource persons in the various fields.

The exercise is part of ongoing workshops for the youth across the world by Edusei Foundation. Already, some youth in the Eastern, Western and Ashanti regions, together with some in the USA and Canada have benefited from the training programmes.

Building integrity and morality

Addressing the opening ceremony, an assistant Parish Priest at the Christ the King Catholic Church, Rev. Fr Joseph Ocran, admonished the youth in the country to live upright lives, stressing that morality and discipline were key to the success of every individual, hence the need for them to make those values their cardinal points for success.

He charged them to look up to Jesus Christ as their role model and follow His footsteps, adding that it was wrong to copy stars who had issues with morality.

Citing some incidents in the media about public figures and parents who had been involved in one crime or another in recent times, Rev. Fr Ocran reiterated the need for the youth to be vigilant about those they chose as their role models.

“If a parent could be teaching his or her child how to steal and some public officers and pastors could be involved in fraud as reported in the media, then it calls for more vigilance.

“The only thing that can help you uphold a high level of morality is by studying the scriptures,” he observed.

He further charged them to be content with whatever they had, saying that greed could lead to impropriety.

Positive thinking attitude

Speaking on the theme, “The power of positive thinking,” a member of the Edusei Foundation, Mr Jermaine Nkrumah, said there was the need for the youth to develop a positive thinking attitude in order to succeed in their fields of endeavours.

“If you find yourself in any challenging situation, never fret and give up; face it and it won’t be long before everything will be over,” he said.

Mr Nkrumah, who is a former Professor of the Houston Community College, Texas, USA, also advised the youth to always see the best in others and strive for excellence.

“There’s absolutely nothing that any human being has done that you cannot do. So always be positive and you’ll make it!”, he advised.

Some of the beneficiaries shared some recent challenges they had encountered and the positive mentality they adopted to overcome them.
